new york diaries

I haven’t read this yet, but from the sounds of it, Teresa Carpenter’s New York Diaries, 1609-2009 is fantastic. Imagine telling the story of a city – the life narrative of a city – through the life writings of its inhabitants.

What a shame that the letters couldn’t have been included in their original handwriting, perhaps juxtaposed with their transcription, so that readers, too, could take an active role in the process of translation and interpretation.

But pop over to the New York Times – they’ve managed to put up 11 of for our delectation.

yum.
